Porto das Pedras is a charming coastal town in Alagoas, known for its crystal-clear beaches, mangroves, and rivers, forming a tranquil haven where biodiversity is preserved and celebrated. The harmony between nature and the local community creates the perfect setting for regenerative tourism experiences, where each visitor is invited to respect and learn about the richness of the local ecosystems.
The Peixe-Boi Association is an organization dedicated to the protection and conservation of manatees, offering educational experiences that allow visitors to observe these marine giants in their natural habitat. One of the main attractions is the boat ride along the Tatuamunha River, which offers an immersive experience into the world of manatees and highlights the importance of preserving the mangroves.
The tour lasts about 1 hour and is available daily. Due to a rotating schedule of guides and a limit on the number of visitors to minimize impact on the habitat, only 10 tours per day are conducted and must be booked in advance, ensuring an exclusive experience with minimal disturbance to the manatee habitat.
MANATEE EXPERIENCE ON THE TATUAMUNHA RIVER
The adventure begins with a peaceful walk through the village of Porto das Pedras, guided by one of the local guides from the Peixe-Boi Association. This is the first step to discovering the natural and cultural surroundings of the tour. The walk lasts about 15 minutes, leading to a wooden bridge over the Tatuamunha River, a perfect spot to observe the mangrove fauna and flora that make up this environmental protection area. Crossing the bridge is an experience in itself: although narrow and rustic, it offers a privileged view of the river and the surrounding forest.
Once on the other side, the most anticipated part of the experience begins: the raft ride! Guided by two rowers, the raft glides smoothly along the river waters as you take in the mangrove and natural wonders around you. During the journey, the guide shares stories and details about the manatee conservation work and the role of the mangrove in preserving the local ecosystem.
There are several strategic stops where you can observe the manatee rehabilitation area, a space where they are carefully reintroduced into the wild. You will get to see the manatees in freedom. Many of them even approach the raft with their slow and graceful pace. These observation moments are magical: there is a nearly silent connection with the animal, a meeting that evokes respect and admiration.
The contemplation is done with care and respect, keeping a safe distance so as not to interfere with the natural behavior of the manatees.
RULES
The Peixe-Boi Association maintains strict rules to ensure the well-being of the animals and the ecosystem. Feeding or touching the manatees is strictly prohibited. Only respectful observation is allowed. For the raft ride, the association provides all necessary safety equipment. Experience this rare encounter with nature, where respect, admiration, and environmental education intertwine to make the experience unforgettable.
