Vale Canoas Circuit

Between canyons and millenary paintings, adventure

through Vale Canoas in Serra da Capivara

A walk full of history, incredible landscapes, baths in natural pools, and living nature in the heart of Piauí

Visiting Serra da Capivara National Park, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, is like passing through a portal to the past of humanity. Located in the southeast of Piauí, the park is an archaeological gem carrying records of the earliest human settlements in the Americas. There are over 1,000 prehistoric sites with rock paintings and engravings that have withstood time and reveal the daily life, spirituality, and customs of groups who inhabited Brazil more than 12,000 years ago.

But Serra da Capivara goes far beyond archaeology. With 130,000 hectares of preserved area, the park is also a paradise for those who love nature, adventure, and breathtaking landscapes. Canyons, trails, impressive rock formations, and fauna typical of the Caatinga biome compose a unique setting that changes its face with the passing seasons. The contrast between the dry vegetation and the areas that bloom with the first rains creates true visual spectacles throughout the year.

It is in this grand setting that Canoas Canyon is located, just 20 km from the municipality of São Raimundo Nonato. A tour that mixes trail hiking, history, nature, and even bathing in natural pools—ideal for those who want to experience the best of ecotourism with excitement and contemplation.

FROM THE TOP OF THE TRAIL TO THE EDGE OF TIME

The adventure begins at João Pimenta Site, the meeting point for the tours. To enjoy milder weather, prioritize starting this adventure early in the morning, while the Piauí sun has not yet shown all its strength.

The Vale Canoas circuit is 7 km long and is rated moderate, perfect for those with basic physical conditioning and a strong desire for adventure. Along the entire route, you will be accompanied by experienced local guides.

As soon as you start walking, your eyes will need a few minutes to adapt to the extraordinary landscapes. Sandstone and conglomerate formations shape the canyons into curves and giant walls. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel small in front of the grandeur of nature!

Halfway through, the trail reveals a true gift: rock paintings with up to 12,000 years of history, recorded on the stones by ancestral peoples. These records impress not only because of their age but also because of their rich details. There are scenes of hunting, rituals, and symbols that awaken the imagination. It’s like walking through an open-air art gallery, but with thousands of years of existence.

And when the heat intensifies, the reward comes in the form of natural pools. These are small pools carved by rainwater, ideal for a relaxing bath amid the vegetation. While floating in this oasis, look up and admire the 50-meter-high cliffs. The sensation is of being inside a natural cathedral, sculpted over millennia. Dive in, rest, and observe the landscape with the sound of birds and the wind hitting the rocks!TIP: For the more adventurous, there is the exciting option of rappelling, with specialized instructors and all safety equipment. It’s a 25-meter vertical descent, with the canyon opening at your feet. The secret? Admiring the spectacular view of the valley that will take your breath away!

MUCH MORE THAN THE TRAIL

Besides the Vale Canoas Circuit, João Pimenta Site offers other experiences for those who want to extend their stay. There are other trails revealing more of the region’s biodiversity, bird watching (highlighting falcons and eagles), and much more. The site also offers camping in safe and quiet areas. All with the warm hospitality of Northeastern Brazil that only reinforces how worthwhile this trip is!

The place has basic infrastructure, well-signposted access information, and a team prepared to ensure safety and learning throughout the experience. The atmosphere is one of adventure but also of contemplation. After all, few places in Brazil bring together so much history and such striking landscapes in a single tour.

STAY ALERT!

The tour is available every day from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and lasts on average 3 to 4 hours. To enjoy the experience comfortably, wear appropriate trail shoes, light clothing, a hat, and sunscreen. Drink plenty of water and don’t forget your camera to capture the most incredible moments of this trail.
