Discover the Beauty and Flavors of Vila Palatéia, the Oyster Paradise of Alagoas
Visiting Vila Palatéia in Barra de São Miguel is an invitation to immerse yourself in the cultural essence of Alagoas.
Vila Palatéia is an environmental reserve and biodiversity sanctuary, where mangroves and the Atlantic Forest come together to create a stunning landscape. Located just minutes from Barra de São Miguel—a town in the Metropolitan Region of Maceió—Palatéia is renowned as the largest oyster producer in Alagoas and home to the Honey Hunters project, which cultivates honey and red propolis.

Accompanied by a specialized guide, you’ll have the chance to enjoy an exclusive experience. This two-hour tour dives deep into the region’s culture and offers an engaging lesson on its flora, fauna, and fascinating local traditions.
GETTING TO VILA PALATÉIA
The adventure begins with a short drive from Barra de São Miguel: a 5-kilometer journey along a dirt road that sets the stage for the area’s charming atmosphere. Around 120 families live in the village, and upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by some of its residents. Life in this community is dictated by the rhythm of the tides. When the tide is low, locals head to the lagoon to harvest oysters, which are carefully cultivated to sustain the community.
Without a rigid itinerary, this tour offers genuine moments of interaction with the locals. Some residents will even invite you into their traditional mud-brick homes, always with a welcoming smile and stories to share.
HONEY PRODUCTION
A local guide will accompany you throughout this enriching experience, starting with the production of honey and red propolis. Highly valued by the pharmaceutical industry worldwide, red propolis is exclusive to the state of Alagoas. Known for its antibacterial, anti-fungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, healing, and antioxidant properties, it is a highly sought-after natural resource.

You’ll have the chance to talk to producers and learn about the entire production process of propolis and honey. And, of course, you’ll get to taste these delicacies, which play a crucial role in generating income and employment for the local community.
NAVIGATING THE CANALS
To navigate the canals, you’ll first take a short trail through the mangroves to reach the canoe boarding point. This walk offers a wonderful opportunity to admire the rich local flora and fauna. Once aboard a canoe, time seems to stand still as you gently glide through the waterways.
The connection with nature is constant and deeply rewarding! As you travel through the canals, your guide will explain the three types of mangroves found in the area: black, red, and white. This location boasts an incredibly rich ecosystem, with nutrient-packed soil ideal for cultivation. Additionally, you’ll be amazed by the variety of bird species and crabs that inhabit the region.
OYSTER TASTING
With every turn, you’ll be captivated by new landscapes and an abundance of wildlife. The canoe ride takes about 15 minutes to reach Lagoa do Roteiro. Egrets soaring over the waters, canoeists at work, and the Oyster Farms together create a truly unique setting. The canoe glides slowly past the oyster farms as the guide explains the entire oyster farming process.
To crown this incredible experience, you’ll have the chance to taste fresh oysters, served with lemon and propolis honey, right there in the canoe. The oysters offer a pure, authentic flavor that reflects the lush nature and simplicity of the area. Undoubtedly one of the most exclusive tours in Alagoas, this experience will leave a lasting impression.
