Admire the spectacle of luminous plankton in Lençóis Maranhenses
Peaceful and welcoming, the village of Atins is the starting point to see nature light up at night amid one of Brazil’s most beautiful landscapes
If you’ve already been enchanted by the crystal-clear lagoons and dunes that stretch to the horizon of Lençóis Maranhenses, get ready to discover a nighttime secret that makes this destination even more fascinating. Located in northeastern Maranhão, the National Park is one of Brazil’s most impressive natural landscapes, recognized as a Natural World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It’s a vast expanse of sand and crystal-clear freshwater lagoons, forming true paradisiacal oases.

The village of Atins stands out as a rustic and charming retreat, perfect for those seeking nature, tranquility, and adventure in this paradise. With sandy streets, charming guesthouses, and warm Brazilian hospitality, Atins is the starting point for unforgettable tours through the Lençóis.
But what few people know is that, at night, nature holds a movie-worthy surprise: the luminous plankton phenomenon, which transforms the sea into a mirror of light. This magical experience happens exclusively during the new moon, when the absence of moonlight enhances the visibility of bioluminescent plankton, revealing an extremely rare natural spectacle.
NATURE LIGHTS ITS OWN LAMP
In a 4x4 vehicle, your guide will take you to Canto de Atins Beach. You’ll arrive shortly after sunset, as the atmosphere becomes more mysterious with the darkening of the landscape.
With your feet in the sand and the sound of waves in the background, your guide will explain the phenomenon. These are marine algae and microorganisms that, when agitated—by footsteps, hands, or even fish movements—emit a bluish, shimmering light, similar to computer-generated effects.
You can dip your feet in, draw with your hands in the water, or simply watch the trail of light forming with the movement of the sea. It’s an almost magical scene, silent and deeply moving!
To complete the evening, the experience includes a pause in the dunes, far from the lights of the village of Atins, to observe the starry sky. With luck, you might see the Milky Way and entire constellations with the naked eye. A moment of contemplation that brings sky, earth, and sea into perfect harmony.
LEARN MORE!
Lasting approximately 2 to 3 hours, the experience includes transportation to the beach, a detailed explanation of the bioluminescence phenomenon, and special time for free contemplation. To make the most of it, wear comfortable clothes, bring insect repellent, a water bottle, and to capture this unique moment, a camera with good night photo sensitivity.

If you’re looking for something truly different, intimate, and unforgettable, don’t miss this experience. Luminous plankton are one of those natural secrets that remind us of how surprising the world can be!
