Jaguar Express: Encounter jaguars in the wild heart of the Pantanal

Get ready for an unforgettable river safari through the Northern Pantanal, the best place in the world to observe jaguars in the wild.

Recognized by UNESCO as a Natural World Heritage Site and a Biosphere Reserve, the Pantanal is the largest floodplain in the world, home to a breathtaking diversity of wildlife. Its dynamic ecosystem transforms with each season, revealing different and stunning features: floods, droughts, blossoming, birdsong, and life cycles unfold before the eyes of those who venture along its lush trails and rivers.

The Northern Pantanal, in the state of Mato Grosso, is one of the most fascinating and accessible regions of this biome, especially for birdwatching, and spotting caimans, capybaras, and giant otters. But between July and November, when the waters recede, the majestic jaguars draw closer to the riverbanks, making this the best place in the world to observe them in their natural habitat.

The charming town of Poconé, about 1.5 hours by car from the capital Cuiabá, is the gateway to photographic safaris and immersive experiences in the Pantanal. It’s where you’ll spend 5 incredible days on an exciting river safari that combines adventure, citizen science, and the unique chance to spot the largest feline in the Americas. Ready to embark on this expedition?

INTO JAGUAR TERRITORY

The Jaguar Express experience is part of a complete 5-day, 4-night itinerary, with accommodation in a charming lodge along the Transpantaneira highway. The adventure begins with a transfer from the Cuiabá airport, with departures at 1:20 p.m. or 5:00 p.m., depending on your flight.

Along the way, you’ll feel like you’re already on a photo safari. Stunning landscapes and frequent encounters with wild animals lead to the point where asphalt gives way to dirt roads, and your immersion in the Pantanal truly begins. Have your camera ready, as the guide will make strategic stops for wildlife and nature observation.

Upon arriving at the lodge, you’ll be welcomed by your hosts, who will take you on a walk around the area while explaining the various conservation projects underway in the region. The walk continues to the Garça (Heron) Viewpoint, 12 meters high, where you’ll witness a sunset you’ll never forget.

At night, after a dinner featuring typical local cuisine, a walk under the starry sky connects you to the sounds and secrets of Pantanal nightlife.

BOAT TOUR ON THE RIO CLARINHO

Day two begins with energy and a hearty breakfast — the adventure soon begins toward the Rio Clarinho. Aboard a rowing boat, you glide silently through calm waters, surrounded by lush riverbank forests and mangroves. This enchanting setting is home to playful giant otters, which often appear in groups, playing and communicating with unique sounds.

The experience gets even more fun with the opportunity to fish for piranhas — an exciting challenge, as these little river masters are experts at quickly stealing bait.

After lunch at the lodge, the afternoon continues with a trail to the impressive Bugio Tower, 25 meters tall, offering a breathtaking view over the vastness of the Pantanal. And when night falls, the show isn’t over: hop aboard a safari truck for a nighttime spotlight tour in search of anteaters, owls, ocelots, and many other nocturnal residents. A magical opportunity to see the richness of this biome in a different light.

HORSEBACK RIDE AND NATURE WALK

After breakfast, day three begins with one of the most authentic moments of the journey: a horseback ride along Pantanal trails. Riding a gentle Pantaneiro horse, you’ll cross open fields, forests, and even flooded areas — a true immersion in the landscape and local knowledge. A peaceful adventure, full of enchantment and insights into the surrounding ecosystem.

After lunch and some time to relax at the lodge, the afternoon brings more discoveries with a walk along the Rondon Trail, leading to the Tuiuiú Tower, 13.5 meters high. From the top, you can spot the nest of a pair of jabirus — the Pantanal’s symbolic bird — in a setting that looks like a painting. The day ends with a quiet dinner at the lodge, under a starry sky and to the sound of nocturnal animals.

JAGUAR ENCOUNTER

On the fourth day, you’ll meet the largest feline in the Americas. After breakfast, you’ll board an air-conditioned vehicle for a 115 km journey along the Transpantaneira to the Porto Jofre region. There, you’ll board a fast, comfortable boat for about six hours of navigation along the Cuiabá, Piquiri, and Três Irmãos rivers — the area with the highest jaguar density in the world!

With sharp eyes and a racing heart, you venture through narrow channels, spotting tracks along the banks, listening to the sounds of the forest — until it happens. Majestic, imposing, with a silent stride, the jaguar appears between the branches or walking along the water’s edge. And when it happens — it’s magical! Nothing compares to seeing this apex predator in the wild, in its own territory.

Lunch is a hearty snack prepared by the lodge and served right on the boat, so you don’t miss a single moment. In the late afternoon, around 5 p.m., the guide begins the return journey to the lodge, just in time for dinner and a restful night with a full heart and light soul.

WAKING UP WITH THE PANTANAL

The last day of your trip includes a short sunrise walk, celebrating the end of your journey. Walking the lodge’s trails to the sound of birdsong and the morning mist rising from the forest, you’ll feel the Pantanal alive and pulsing.

The return to Cuiabá is at 7:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m., depending on your flight time. Along the way, expect a few stops for that last perfect photo — or perhaps another unexpected encounter with Pantanal wildlife.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW!

The Jaguar Express itinerary is available from July to November, the ideal period for jaguar spotting. The experience includes round-trip transfer from Cuiabá, comfortable lodging, all meals, and a complete program with guided tours, nature walks, horseback rides, birdwatching, nighttime spotlighting, and the long-awaited Jaguar Express river safari.
