São José do Rio Claro: Discover One of Brazil’s Best Birdwatching Destinations
Birdwatching in its natural habitat is an enriching and impactful experience, especially at sunset, when nature’s magic is at its peak.
The municipality of São José do Rio Claro in Mato Grosso is a true treasure for nature lovers. Among the most cherished activities in the region is birdwatching, which offers the chance to spot many rare and even endangered species. Here, you’ll find the captivating Jardim da Amazônia, one of Brazil’s premier birdwatching destinations.

Located on the banks of the Rio Claro, where the Cerrado meets the Amazon Rainforest, the Jardim da Amazônia boasts a rich and diverse ecosystem. It is home to over 30 species of mammals, countless springs, and more than 570 recorded bird species. The trails in this area are true gems, where you can encounter species such as the emblematic tiê-bicudo (Cone-billed Tanager), an endangered bird found only in this location.
In addition to its lush flora and crystal-clear rivers, this paradise offers a unique opportunity to explore one of Brazil’s most biodiverse areas. Combining the Jatobá and Lagoon Trails with the sunset at the Macaw Nest is an unforgettable experience!
JATOBÁ TRAIL
The adventure begins after lunch with the Jatobá Trail. This trail spans just over 3 kilometers through a lush forest environment. Your guide will lead you along a narrow path, where you’ll have the chance to observe various animals in their natural habitats, such as monkeys, tapirs, and more. Of course, you’ll also spot numerous bird species in flocks.
This trail is perfect for appreciating the forest’s diversity, where you’ll encounter the majestic jatobá tree—considered sacred by Indigenous peoples. Known for its medicinal properties, the tree’s bark is often used to make teas, while its leaves are turned into tinctures.

And naturally, plenty of birds will cross your path. You might spot and photograph species like the capitão-de-cinta (Black-girdled Barbet), coroa-de-fogo (Fiery-capped Manakin), cambaxirra-cinzenta (Gray Elaenia), and topetinho-do-brasil-central (Horned Sungem). Butterflies are also abundant in the region, with the dazzling blue morpho butterfly being a standout sight.
LAGOON TRAIL
The Jatobá Trail concludes, seamlessly transitioning into the Lagoon Trail. Stretching 1 kilometer, this trail showcases the harmonious meeting of Cerrado and Amazonian vegetation. The animals and birds encountered here are similar to those on the previous trail, making it the perfect setting for a leisurely stroll.
Every bend and every step reveals new sounds, colors, and movements, immersing you in an experience that is both engaging and unforgettable. Take your time, savoring the intricate details of this vibrant ecosystem.
SUNSET AT THE MACAW NEST
In the late afternoon, around 4 p.m., the adventure continues towards the Macaw Nest—one of the most anticipated highlights for visitors to Jardim da Amazônia. Your guide will drive you along a scenic road to the banks of the Rio Claro, where a canoe awaits.
Gliding gently over the water, you’ll be mesmerized by the Macaw Nest, one of the largest natural nurseries for macaws and other birds in the region.
Parrots, parakeets, and macaws gather in flocks, flying between the trees and painting the sky with their vibrant colors. The landscape is further enriched by the orange tones of the setting sun, casting a warm glow as the day comes to a close.
Ending your day in the presence of such majestic birds is a privilege—a moment of profound peace and connection with nature that will stay with you forever.
