The tour provides an immersive journey, guided by stories and memories that honor the importance and impact of the Black community in shaping Maceió. Embark on this cultural route and discover a side of the city that often remains hidden from conventional views.

The Black Maceió

The experience begins early at 7 a.m. The guide picks you up at the hotel and heads to the first destination: the historic neighborhood of Jaraguá. This part of the city was once a port of entry for enslaved Africans, and the Rota do Comércio dos Negros Escravizados (Route of the Enslaved Black Traders) allows you to explore the impact of this period on the cultural and social formation of Maceió. Along the route, the guide provides context for each location, highlighting the monuments and historical buildings. You will feel the weight and importance of this neighborhood!

Next, the tour moves to the traditional Praça Sinimbu, a location of great symbolism for the Black population of Alagoas. Here, you’ll learn about the Quebra de Xangô, a pivotal episode of religious intolerance that led to the destruction of Afro-Brazilian religious centers and the persecution of their practitioners in 1912.

The following stop is Praça dos Palmares, where you’ll dive deeper into the history of Black resistance. The square is named after Zumbi and the Quilombo dos Palmares, icons of resistance in the fight for freedom by enslaved Africans who escaped to Palmares. The location is a symbol of contemplation and recognition of the legacy of the warriors who fought for the freedom of the enslaved.

The guide will then take you to Mirante do Farol. In addition to a panoramic view of the city, you will reflect on the role of Black people in the construction and economy of Maceió. The tour then continues to the Mercado do Artesanato, a space where the popular culture and craftsmanship of the state are celebrated. It’s a great moment to stop and savor authentic regional dishes, and don’t forget to take a piece of local craft as a souvenir!

After lunch, the journey continues to Praça Moleque Namorador, where the traditions and celebrations of Maceió’s carnival are unveiled. The guide will give a true lesson on the importance of carnival and how it has become a symbol of resistance and the celebration of Black culture in the city. From there, the tour moves to Riacho Doce, where you’ll visit the traditional Boleiras’ flour house. These women produce beiju, tapioca, cassava cake, peanut brittle, and much more, using recipes passed down through generations. Don’t miss the opportunity to taste these local delicacies!

The experience concludes at Ilê Axé Pratagy, located at Mirante da Sereia, a Candomblé terreiro (spiritual center) that welcomes you for a special moment. It’s a peaceful and spiritual place where you’ll learn about the importance of preserving African-based religions. Around 4 p.m., the guide will take you back to your hotel.
