Historic Tour Cidade Griot – Praia Grande

Discover Black São Luís on a guided tour through the Historic Center

Focusing on Afro-Maranhense culture, memory, and ancestry, the Praia Grande historical tour reveals what books don’t tell

São Luís is a city where past and present walk side by side, like a planned encounter between cobblestone streets, tiled façades, and drums echoing through alleys. The capital of Maranhão and guardian of unique traditions, the city is a mosaic of stories, sounds, and flavors. And beyond the beauty of its colonial houses and soap-opera-worthy settings, there is a São Luís that pulses to the rhythm of resistance, African heritage, and the strength of the people who built it with their own hands.

The Black legacy is everywhere: in the drumming of tambor de crioula, in African-rooted religious yards, in the typical cuisine, and in the very cultural makeup of the city. It is impossible to understand São Luís without recognizing the central role of the Afro population in its history. Still, many of these narratives remain invisible in traditional itineraries. That’s why visiting the city with different eyes and ears is an urgent and necessary invitation.

This invitation takes shape in the Cidade Griot – Praia Grande experience, a historical and emotional tour that dives into the Historic Center of São Luís, recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, from the Afro-Maranhense perspective. Through alleys, squares, and centuries-old buildings, you will be guided by stories of resistance, ancestral knowledge, and Black figures who left their mark on the foundations of the Maranhão capital.

HISTORIC CENTER

The meeting point with your guide is the imposing Igreja da Sé, one of the oldest temples in the city, whose baroque architecture bears the marks of the Black labor that built it. It’s an invitation to reflect on the role of enslaved populations in constructing religious spaces and their resistance within a system that sought to erase their original beliefs.

The tour continues to the Palácio dos Leões, seat of the Maranhão government, with its impressive view of the Baía de São Marcos. Beyond its political and architectural value, the palace also holds in its walls and behind-the-scenes the memories of the Black people who, invisibly, sustained its existence for centuries. Here, the focus turns to the occupation of these spaces and the deliberate omission of Afro-descendant histories in official accounts.

The route leads to the symbolic Beco Catarina Mina, which honors a free Black woman, merchant, and historical figure from the 19th century. You will hear stories of women who defied the norms of their time, conquering economic and social space with courage and intelligence. A true rescue of the Black female presence in the city’s formation!

The Mercado das Tulhas, also known as Mercado da Praia Grande, is the next stop. Ancestry manifests in the form of spices, medicinal herbs, typical sweets, and expressions of Maranhão’s everyday culture. It’s where African heritage mingles with the present in each stall and every accent. Next comes a visit to the Reggae Museum, one of the only museums of its kind outside Jamaica. The space reinforces the cultural ties between São Luís and reggae music, celebrating African influence in the rhythms that move the island and revealing how reggae became part of the local Black identity.

The tour continues to the charming Praça Nauro Machado, which, in addition to its architectural beauty, is a vibrant venue for cultural expressions like tambor de crioula drum circles, markets, and popular performances. Finally, there is Praça da Liberdade with its Monument to the African Diaspora, a landmark of memory, pain, and resistance. The sculpture honors the millions of enslaved Africans and symbolizes the strength and living presence of this ancestry. It’s a moment of silence, reflection, and respect that often moves all participants!

The tour is led by Black people, with ancestral knowledge and direct connection to the territory, which makes each stop even richer and more authentic.

CELEBRATION OF BLACK ANCESTRY

This experience goes far beyond the itinerary. It is a living celebration of Black culture in the city and a way to acknowledge that Black São Luís exists, resists, and pulses on every corner. Step in, listen, walk, and discover a city with far more history than what façades reveal!
