Explore Afro-Brazilian culture in Salvador, the most African city outside of Africa.
As the first capital of Brazil, Salvador reveals centuries-old traces of a country in the making, alongside a vibrant present that blends African heritage and modernity.
Salvador is recognized as the center of Afro-Brazilian culture, which is reflected at every corner of the city—in its cuisine, spirituality, and rhythms. The history of Brazil is closely tied to Salvador, the country’s first capital, especially in the historic center, in the Pelourinho neighborhood, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. There, you’ll see old colonial-era mansions infused with a dynamic vision of Afro-Brazilian culture.

This unique setting makes Bahia’s capital a special destination for Afro-tourism, celebrating African legacies and inviting travelers to discover stories and practices of resistance, faith, and celebration. The Bahia Negra experience is one of these transformative itineraries. Lasting about five hours, the tour begins and ends in Salvador’s historic center, allowing you to experience rhythms, flavors, struggles, and traditions that continue to shape the city’s life today.
PERCUSSION WORKSHOP
The experience begins with an engaging percussion workshop. The rhythm master introduces the famous atabaques rum, rumpi, and lê—drums used in candomblé ceremonies and other Afro-Brazilian rituals—along with other instruments such as tambourines and drums. As you learn the rhythms and beats, African and Brazilian rhythms emerge, unveiling the ancestral power of the instruments. The energizing beat of the drums fills the space, creating a true musical immersion
CAPOEIRA
After the percussion workshop, the next encounter is with a capoeira master. It’s time to learn more about this fusion of music, dance, and martial art—a symbol of resistance for enslaved people that has become emblematic of Bahian culture. The sound of the berimbau guides the rhythm, while the master teaches the gingado and basic capoeira movements. In a relaxed and welcoming environment, you’ll learn much more than just how to play capoeira. You’ll understand the historical and cultural significance of this art form!

Did you know? The Roda de Capoeira (Capoeira Circle) is recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This Afro-Brazilian cultural expression has gained global recognition and is now practiced in over 160 countries by people of all ages. In Brazil, the craft of capoeira masters is considered Cultural Heritage by the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN).
SÃO JOAQUIM MARKET
The tour continues to the iconic Feira de São Joaquim. This is Salvador’s most traditional market and one of the best places to experience Afro-Brazilian culture in its purest form. At the colorful stalls, you’ll find a wide range of products used in Afro-Brazilian rituals and ceremonies, such as herbs, amulets, and religious items.
The market also offers an incredible variety of ingredients typical of Bahian cuisine. It’s the perfect place to meet the people of Salvador and taste local spices and delicacies. All of this in a vibrant and authentic atmosphere!
LACERDA ELEVATOR
The experience ends at the Lacerda Elevator, one of Salvador’s main tourist attractions. The elevator connects Praça Tomé de Sousa in the Upper City (Pelourinho and Historic Center area) with Praça Visconde de Cairu in the Lower City (port area). As you ascend to the historic center, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking view, where you can see Baía de Todos os Santos, the Mercado Modelo, and the Forte de São Marcelo.
Fun fact: The Lacerda Elevator is the world’s first urban elevator. Its design was conceived by Antônio de Lacerda and built by his brother Augusto between 1869 and 1873. However, it was in 1930 that it received its elegant Art Deco style. The Lacerda Elevator is a modern architectural landmark and has been designated as Cultural Heritage by the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN).
