Night Visit to Boqueirão da Pedra Furada

Discover Boqueirão da Pedra Furada by Starlight

Experience the magic of Brazil’s only archaeological site prepared for night visits, where rock paintings come to life under the Serra da Capivara sky

The largest open-air rock art collection in the world is in Piauí. That’s right! Recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Serra da Capivara National Park has more than 1,000 archaeological sites with rock paintings dating back 25,000 years, telling the story of the ancient inhabitants of the region.

Among reddish canyons and rock formations carved by time, viewpoints with enchanting views, and caves full of stories to tell, the park invites you to travel through time. By day, visitors explore trails through the caatinga to find panels depicting extinct animals, ritual scenes, and mysterious graphics that challenge interpretation.

But it is when the sun sets that Serra da Capivara reveals its best kept secret: Boqueirão da Pedra Furada, the only archaeological site in the country specially prepared for night visits. This immersion into Serra da Capivara is a unique journey well worth experiencing!

BOQUEIRÃO DA PEDRA FURADA

Boqueirão da Pedra Furada is the most famous site in Serra da Capivara, with a rock wall 75 meters high and 70 meters wide. The walls are covered by over a thousand graphics which, when studied alongside other figures in the region, reveal two major periods in which the paintings were made. Yes, on the same rock wall you can find paintings from different eras. To better view all these paintings, the site features a walkway.

NIGHT EXPERIENCE

During the day, Boqueirão da Pedra Furada impresses with its wall full of drawings. But at night it transforms into a grand stage of light and shadows where the past seems to whisper directly to visitors.

The night tour begins at the Park’s Visitor Center around 5:30 p.m. The timing is carefully calculated so you arrive at the rock wall just as the sun begins to say goodbye. This magical transition between light and darkness is unforgettable. The sunset over the rock walls turns the landscape into a spectacle of colors, ranging from fiery orange to deep purple.

As the last light fades on the horizon, you reach the Boqueirão da Pedra Furada Shelter. This is when the true magic begins. Strategically placed spotlights gradually turn on, illuminating the rock art panels with a light that mimics ancient prehistoric torches. The effect is stunning: layers of paintings previously invisible to the naked eye emerge from the sandstone walls, revealing details hidden for centuries.

Over the next 20 minutes, you’ll be guided along the walkway while contemplating a narrative sequence that brings ancestral figures to life. Hunting scenes gain three-dimensional depth, as if happening right then. The special lighting creates effects that highlight every stroke left by the ancient artists, transforming the rock shelter into a true theater of the past.

The most intense moment happens when all the spotlights are turned off. The starry sky of Piauí serves as the perfect natural backdrop while the guide shares stories based on decades of meticulous research. All this creates a genuine feeling of how ancient peoples must have experienced this sacred site. After the lights go out, the guide leads you back to the Visitor Center.

PREPARE FOR THE ADVENTURE

To make the most of this transformative experience, some preparations are essential. With limited spots for just 25 people per night, reservations are recommended at least 48 hours in advance. Nights in the semi-arid region can be surprisingly cool, so bringing a jacket is advised. Closed, non-slip footwear is mandatory for the night walk. Cameras with night mode can capture stunning images of the illuminated paintings.

Perhaps the most valuable advice is simply to remain silent during the key moments of the visit. This attitude amplifies this sensory journey that connects you with the earliest artistic expressions in the Americas, under the same celestial vault that inspired our ancestors millennia ago. A true natural time machine.
