Inhotim: Visit the Largest Open-Air Museum in Latin America
The Inhotim Institute combines a rich Contemporary Art Museum with an exuberant Botanical Garden, creating a unique space for contemplation and inspiration.
Inhotim was conceived in the 1980s by Minas Gerais businessman Bernardo de Mello Paz. However, it wasn’t until 2006 that one of the largest open-air museums in the world opened its doors to the public. Located in a privileged area, it shares its magnificent space with the rich biomes of the Atlantic Forest and the Cerrado. Spanning 140 hectares, it houses over 1,800 works of art by more than 280 artists from 43 countries. The works are exhibited outdoors and in 24 galleries, offering a truly unique experience!

You’ll see that there’s nothing like Inhotim! This paradise is located in Brumadinho, just 60 km from Belo Horizonte (approximately 1.5 hours by car). It’s the perfect choice for a day trip from the capital of Minas Gerais. However, if you have more time, it’s best to spend two days exploring Inhotim. You can even stay overnight in Brumadinho!
START OF THE TOUR
Whether you are an art enthusiast, a nature lover, or someone seeking a culturally enriching experience, Inhotim will undoubtedly leave an unforgettable mark on your memory! The tour begins early, around 8:00 AM, when the guide picks you up at your hotel in Belo Horizonte and heads towards Inhotim.
A guided tour of Inhotim is the best option for a deep dive into all that the museum has to offer, helping you make the most of your time since the space is vast.
THE TRAILS OF INHOTIM
To make the visit easier, the Institute has divided the space into three different trails: pink, yellow, and orange. These trails connect the galleries, and along each path, you’ll encounter beautiful nature, over 4,000 plant species from different continents, stunning gardens, and impressive outdoor works of art. There are even huge benches made from tree trunks for you to take a break!
The orange trail is the longest and has the most attractions. It features 10 permanent galleries, each showcasing the work of a single artist. These galleries are named after the artists whose works are exhibited there. You’ll also have access to the Galpão—a space for temporary and medium-term exhibits. Be sure to check the schedule with your guide to see which exhibitions will be available on the day of your visit.
Walking along the trail is an adventure in itself! You’ll be amazed by the seven gardens along the orange trail, which not only look beautiful but also house endemic Brazilian plant species, some of which are even threatened with extinction. Throughout the journey, breathtaking landscapes will merge art with nature. On the orange trail, you’ll discover 10 outdoor works of art by 9 artists.
The orange trail intertwines with the yellow trail, which also boasts many attractions. The focus here is around two large lakes, making it easy to walk along the trail without needing to rely on electric cars for transportation. You’ll visit 4 permanent galleries and two spaces for temporary exhibitions.
Your walk along the yellow trail will amaze you with Pictorial Garden and Orchid Plaza. And of course, you’ll lose yourself in the magnificent outdoor exhibits. There are 11 spaces created by 12 artists, making it a must-see that will leave you wanting to spend hours appreciating the works!
The last trail, but equally important, is the pink trail. This one has fewer attractions, and some of them are farther apart, so using the internal transport system is a great idea! Along the pink trail, you’ll see 4 outdoor interventions, each created by a renowned artist. The galleries also feature both temporary and permanent exhibitions.
