Xingó: Cruise the Emerald Waters of Brazil’s Largest Navigable Canyon

The boat tour through the Canyons of Xingó is an immersion into the geological history of the planet and the riverside culture of the São Francisco River

Canindé de São Francisco, in the hinterlands of Sergipe, holds one of the best-preserved secrets of Brazil’s Northeast. Located 213 km from Aracaju, this welcoming town is the gateway to a world of dramatic landscapes carved by time and by the São Francisco River. The contrast is striking: while the dry scrubland dominates the surface, a breathtaking aquatic universe unfolds in the depths of the canyons. This region, which has served as a backdrop for films and soap operas, is a living testament to nature’s transformative power.

The Canyons of Xingó are geological monuments that defy the imagination. With rock walls reaching up to 50 meters high, sculpted into 600-million-year-old sedimentary formations, this is the 5th largest navigable canyon in the world. The waters of the “Velho Chico” (as the São Francisco River is affectionately called), in emerald-green hues, snake between rock formations that resemble abstract works of natural art. The contrast between the arid terrain above and this subterranean oasis embodies the duality of the sertão.

Once entirely submerged, the region still holds in its rocks the secrets of ancient eras, while local communities continue to live in harmony with this giant of stone and water.

NAVIGATING THE VELHO CHICO

The boat tour through the Canyons of Xingó is a journey into the geological past of the planet and the rich culture of the São Francisco River’s riverside dwellers. The day begins even before the sun fully rises, as the first golden rays illuminate the sertão and the morning breeze still carries the freshness of the night. At 6:30 a.m., the guide picks you up from your hotel in Aracaju and the journey begins toward the heart of the Velho Chico.

The drive along the highway feels like a live lesson in the resilience of Brazil’s northeastern hinterlands. With each kilometer, the landscape transforms. The contrast between the arid ground and the stubborn vegetation prepares your spirit for the revelation that lies ahead.

Around 9 a.m., with the sun already high in the sky, the vehicle stops at Restaurante Karranca, on the banks of the São Francisco River. While the catamaran is being readied, you can enjoy a traditional northeastern breakfast with freshly made tapioca, grilled coalho cheese, and tropical fruits. All accompanied by the mesmerizing view of the first emerald-green waters you’re about to sail.

At exactly 10 a.m., when the bell of the catamaran rings announcing departure, the adventure truly begins. The vessel glides smoothly over the calm waters of the Velho Chico. Towering rock walls begin to rise on either side—taller and more impressive at every turn—until you are fully enveloped by these natural stone fortresses.

Over the next four hours of navigation, each bend in the river reveals a new surprise. Along the way, the guide points out rock formations sculpted by time, such as the Pedra do Gavião (Hawk Rock), with its proud bird-of-prey profile, and the Ship’s Bow, which looks ready to set sail. Each comes with its own legend, passed down through generations of riverside storytellers.

TALHADO CAVE

The stop at Gruta do Talhado (Talhado Cave) is one of the most magical moments of the journey. When the catamaran engine cuts out and you enter the flooded cave, the perfect acoustics transform any voice into a floating melody. It’s here that the guide often sings traditional boatman songs, their music echoing off the cave’s damp walls as if the river spirits themselves were answering.

Then comes the most tempting invitation: a swim in these emerald waters, which maintain a perfect 28°C (82°F) almost all year round. When you dive in, you discover how clear the water is—you can see schools of fish like piaus and surubins swimming several meters below, their silver bodies sparkling like coins on the riverbed.

LUNCH TIME

Around noon, there’s a strategic stop at a floating restaurant, where lunch is a celebration of riverside cuisine. Dishes like grilled surubim wrapped in banana leaf or pacamã in passionfruit sauce tell, through their flavors, the story of the enduring bond between the people and the river.

As you savor your meal, you can watch local fishermen paddle by in colorful canoes, keeping alive traditions that go back to the region’s earliest inhabitants.

RETURN TO ARACAJU

The return trip begins around 2 p.m., taking a different route that reveals new angles of the canyons in the afternoon light. At this time, the hues of the rock walls intensify, creating a spectacle of colors reflected in the waters. Around 4 p.m., after disembarking from the catamaran, the overland return begins—with arrival at the hotel expected around 8 p.m.

Sailing through the Canyons of Xingó is a journey that deeply stirs all the senses. What makes this experience truly unique is the rare combination of elements that you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else on the planet. But perhaps the most moving aspect of all is the opportunity to connect firsthand with the rich riverside culture that has developed in harmony with the river.

GETTING READY FOR THE ADVENTURE

Wear light, comfortable clothes that allow for easy movement, and be sure to use sunscreen to protect yourself from the strong northeastern sun. Don’t forget a hat for the peak sun hours, swimwear to enjoy the inviting waters, and of course, a waterproof camera to capture every magical moment worry-free.

This journey through the Canyons of Xingó is like traveling through time, where you’ll have the privilege of witnessing with your own eyes the patient force of water that sculpted these impressive rock formations.
